Marie Antoinette
printer friendly version
Let them eat cake!

["Queen Marie Antoinette did not say 'Let them eat cake.' The line
comes from a fable told by Jean-Jacques Rousseau about a princess
so clueless or insensitive that when she was told that the people
had no bread, said "Oh., let them eat cake." Rousseau
died before Marie Antoinette even came to France. In all the hysteria
and anger about issues involving poverty and hatred of the monarchy
during the Revolution, the story somehow came to be applied to her."
